BOISE, Idaho--Nov. 26, 2002--Washington Group International (OTCBB:WGII) today announced that Bradley D. Giles, a 22-year company veteran, has been promoted to corporate vice president of environmental safety and health (ES&H). He had served as the company's director of ES&H since 2000. Giles has more than 26 years of ES&H management experience in the engineering and construction, and mining industries and has worked in all of Washington Group's six business units. As the head of Washington Group's ES&H program, he has overall responsibility for almost 1,500 safety professionals located on projects in more than 30 countries. "Safety is Washington Group's number-one priority and Brad Giles is the consummate safety professional," said Thomas H. Zarges, the company's senior executive vice president and chief operating officer. "During the past two years, he has led our company's already strong ES&H program to an even higher level by emphasizing accountability and training for supervisors, and professional development for ES&H personnel. There is no doubt that, under Brad's guidance, Washington Group will continue to rank among the safest places to work in our industry throughout the world." Giles has received several professional honors during his career, including being selected "Safety Professional of the Year" for the Construction Division of the American Society of Safety Professionals in 1994 for his efforts during construction of the Denver International Airport. Washington Group served as program manager on the $3.1 billion project and, as safety manager, Giles supervised a safety program that had responsibility for the health and safety of as many as 11,000 people. In late 2001, he led a team of 16 Washington Group ES&H employees who provided field safety oversight for the first three months of the recovery and demolition operation at the World Trade Center site in New York City. After joining Washington Group in 1980 as a senior safety supervisor, Giles held a series of increasingly responsible positions, including corporate safety manager; ES&H manger for the company's heavy civil construction operations; and group ES&H director responsible for environmental, government, demilitarization, international infrastructure, operations and maintenance, and buildings units. Earlier in his career, he worked as a safety supervisor for Consolidated Coal Company. Giles graduated from Southern Illinois University, from where he also earned a master's degree in industrial safety. He is a Certified Safety Professional and a Registered Professional Engineer.
