WASHINGTON--Nov. 19, 2003--Hanley Wood, LLC, brought together high-level executives and decision-makers from the nation's top home-building firms for three days of education and networking at a first-of-its-kind event. BIG BUILDER '03 premiered at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas on Nov. 11-13. The company's leading residential construction magazines, Builder and Big Builder, created the conference to help address the operational issues and competitive pressures faced by the nation's largest-volume home-building companies.
High-volume builders are an increasingly distinctive subset within the overall home-building market. Hanley Wood research shows that less than 1 percent of America's builders account for approximately 33 percent of new homes built annually. The educational sessions and networking activities at BIG BUILDER '03 were designed to help these builders confront their unique business challenges and opportunities.
"This is the first educational event in our industry where high-volume builders are surrounded only by their peers," said Hanley Wood president Frank Anton. "We felt big builders were hungry for an educational and networking event such as this one, and sponsors see that consolidation of purchasing power at the top of the industry has significant implications for their businesses."
More than 300 builder managers and executives attended the event. Major sponsors included Timberlake Cabinet Co., Masco Corp., Nextel Communications, and Whirlpool Corp. Program topics included building, finance, sales and marketing, and business mergers and acquisitions. A moderated roundtable featuring executives from top builders The Ryland Group, K. Hovnanian Enterprises, Inc., KB Home, and D. R. Horton opened the event. To give the event a uniquely intimate feel, Hanley Wood created a MarketSpace area that included interactive kiosks and meeting and exhibit spaces designed with a boardroom feel.
"Acceptance of this event, by both sponsors and builders, was extremely strong," said Anton noting that exhibitor spots for the event sold out in less than a month. "There is a micromarket emerging in the housing industry, and the success of BIG BUILDER '03 tells us Hanley Wood is addressing the information needs of these builders."
Three of the company's five divisions developed and produced BIG BUILDER '03. Hanley Wood Magazines leveraged its connection to builders and exhibitors in creating unique educational programming. Hanley Wood Exhibitions designed and coordinated BIG BUILDER '03, and Hanley Wood Marketing promoted it.
"We've received great feedback about this year's event," Anton said. "We've already heard from a number of sponsors who are interested in next year. We believe attendance will grow as builders go back to their companies and discuss the event with their colleagues."
