SAN FRANCISCO ? What a year it?s been for Chong Partners Architecture, formerly known as Gordon H Chong & Partners.
The firm?s new name and headquarters at 405 Howard Street in San Francisco?s vibrant South Financial District represent its growth and evolution into one of California?s fastest-growing companies.
In the past year alone, Chong Partners Architecture has been ranked the 6th largest architectural firm in the Bay Area by San Francisco Business Times and the 2nd largest local practice by the Sacramento Business Journal. The firm was also ranked the 7th largest architecture practice in the state by McGraw Hill?s California Construction and one of the nation?s Top 20 healthcare practices in the March issue of Modern Healthcare magazine. And in October, Chong Partners Architecture ranked 27th in the San Francisco Business Times? list of the 100 fastest-growing private companies in the Bay Area.
Despite sluggish billings for architecture firms throughout the country, with firms specializing in the institutional sector reporting continued shrinking activity, Chong Partners Architecture has experienced unprecedented growth.
In February, the firm?s Sacramento office moved to a new downtown location, featuring 11,000 square feet of open studio space ? more than double the size of its previous address. Seven months later, Chong Partners Architecture opened its newest office in San Diego as part of its efforts to service the Southern California market. The firm?s new San Francisco headquarters at Foundry Square provides 43,000 sf. of office space in a strikingly modern building.
The expansive new studio features research facilities, a library, training areas, a cafe and team spaces. The office will serve as a working laboratory space for environmentally sensitive design and is a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) interiors pilot project. Daylight sensors automatically adjust interior lighting for energy conservation. Full under-floor HVAC system uses fresh filtered air, which is distributed under the office floor. This allows occupants to control the air temperature of their workspace.
Chong Partners Architecture specializes in community-based architecture: interior and architectural design, master planning and urban design for healthcare, educational, transportation, civic and cultural clients. It is also a firm that emphasizes community involvement on a personal as well as professional level, with many of the firm?s staff and leadership actively involved in a variety of civic, educational and other service organizations.
The firm was founded in San Francisco in 1976 by Gordon Chong. He recently served as national president of the American Institute of Architects, the first Asian American to attain the 150-year-old organization's top spot.
