WHITTIER, Calif.--Oct. 15, 2003--In a move the company says solidifies and extends its top management leadership, Joseph O. Oltmans II, a third generation builder, and John Gormly, a 28-year veteran of the firm, have been named chairman of the board/CEO and president, respectively, of Whittier, Calif.-based Oltmans Construction Co., perennially one of Southern California's leading commercial/industrial general contractors.
Oltmans, who previously served as president/CEO, assumes a post once held by his late father, O.H. "Bud" Oltmans. His grandfather, J.O. Oltmans, founded Oltmans Construction Co. 75 years ago in Los Angeles.
Oltmans, 64, who is well-known and respected in the industry, has been with Oltmans Construction Co. since 1962 and will continue to oversee overall company operations. He joins Robert M. Holmes as co-chairman. Holmes, having served Oltmans for over 50 years, will continue to serve the company in an advisory role as co-chairman.
Oltmans is a graduate of the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Science degree in Real Estate. He and his wife, Annette, reside in Laguna Beach, Calif.
Gormly, 56, becomes president after serving as senior vice president since 1985. As president he will oversee all day-to-day construction activities of the company, Oltmans said.
"John Gormly is a talented and experienced construction industry executive who is highly respected throughout our industry. His appointment as president solidifies our top management well into the foreseeable future," said Oltmans. He noted that Gormly becomes only the fifth president in the firm's seven-decade history.
Gormly brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his post. Originally joining the company as an estimator trainee, he went on to project management, eventually overseeing the company's estimating department, and directing all business development, before assuming the duties of his last position as senior vice president.
"It's an honor to serve as president of one of the oldest and best-respected general contracting companies in Southern California. I look forward to extending the honorable tradition of Oltmans," said Gormly.
Gormly's diverse construction background has enabled him to share his knowledge as a speaker before numerous business and civic organizations. He has also taught construction management courses at UCLA. Gormly has also served his profession as a member of the board of directors of the Orange County Chapter, NAIOP, and the Newport Mesa Unified School District Citizens Oversight Committee. He holds contractors licenses in California, Arizona and Nevada.
Gormly is a graduate of California State University, Long Beach, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management.
He and his wife, Bridget, and their children, Alexandra, 15, and Jonathan, 13, reside in Newport Beach, Calif.
Long regarded as a pacesetter in the modern applications of concrete tilt-up construction, Oltmans Construction Co. has been a major player in applying that expertise to office buildings, research and development projects, and major distribution facilities alike.
Oltmans Construction Co. is ranked among the top l0 commercial and industrial contractors based in Los Angeles County, and was recently ranked among the nation's top five builders of distribution facilities by ENGINEERING NEWS-RECORD magazine. The company has offices in both Whittier, Calif., and Ventura County.
