University of Maryland testing validates performance of energy-saving data center technology

BALTIMORE - June 18, 2003 - Testing funded through the University of Maryland?s innovative research and development initiative, Maryland Industrial Partnerships program, proves that the Tower of Cool technology patented by Baltimore-based RTKL effectively cools data storage racks using less energy than traditional cooling methods.
RTKL, an international, multi-disciplined design services practice headquartered in Baltimore, was awarded a $30,000 research grant last October to work in conjunction with University of Maryland researchers on testing the technology. The matching grant came from the University?s Engineering Research Center Maryland Industrial Partnerships program (MIPS).
RTKL and Dr. Reinhard Radermacher of University of Maryland used the grant to design and build testing equipment for Tower of Cool technology. Results of the testing show that the system is a significant innovation on thirty-year-old cooling approaches. Instead of the traditional strategy, which cools the room in order to keep the cabinets themselves cool, the RTKL technology cools the cabinet itself.
?One of the benefits of the Tower of Cool technology that was demonstrated during the testing was the uniform supply temperature it provided for all the equipment in the cabinet, eliminating the hot spots found in traditional cooling approaches,? said Dr. Radermacher. ?The result could be a significant extension in the life of the equipment.?
According to its designer, RTKL Vice President Stephen Spinazzola PE, ?Tower of Cool technology ultimately provides more focused, more effective cooling of the servers. It can result in first cost energy savings of 6% or more to companies who invest in Tower of Cool technology for their data centers.?
RTKL was granted three U.S. patents for Tower of Cool technology in 2002and 2003. Multiple additional patents are pending both domestically and internationally.
