RTKL Completes Leadership Transition: Paul F. Jacob Named Chairman

BALTIMORE, RTKL Associates Inc., an international architecture and design consultancy, has named Paul F. Jacob III AIA as Chairman of its Board of Directors, according to David C. Hudson AIA, RTKL's President and CEO.<p>Jacob's appointment, unanimously approved by RTKL's Board of Directors and Shareholders, became effective at the firm's annual shareholders meeting in Baltimore on April 26. <p> Mr. Jacob, who is known as "PJ," has served as the firm's Vice Chairman for the past year to facilitate in the leadership transition. His appointment represents a carefully orchestrated passage from more than three decades of acclaimed leadership by Harold L. Adams FAIA RIBA JIA, RTKL's Chairman since 1987, who helped steer RTKL from a single-office regional practice into a multi-office, multi-disciplinary international practice with projects in 60 countries across the globe. <p>Of his successor, Adams says: "PJ has a deep, passionate understanding of the firm and our profession. He brings the clarity of vision and understanding of design culture that RTKL needs to re-define the modern architecture practice and strengthen our position as a world leader in design services."
Jacob, who has been with RTKL for more than 30 years, has long been instrumental in defining new directions for the company. An award-winning designer, Jacob helped establish the firm's Los Angeles office in 1986; was a guiding spirit behind the creation of ID8, RTKL's in-house graphic design and branding consultancy; and has recently played an important role in the firm's expansion into China.

And so RTKL is poised to move to the next level, redefining the role of the architect and designer in today's world and exploring new venues for our ideas."
As Chairman Emeritus, Adams will remain active with RTKL on a consulting basis, maintaining relationships with key clients and certain ongoing projects. Adams initiated the transition last year, shifting his duties as CEO to Dave Hudson. Adams, Hudson and Jacob have spent the last 12 months working closely together on a fluid transfer of leadership and on developing an organizational structure that maximizes the diverse strengths of each of RTKL's design professionals.
Of the new executive team, Adams says: "They will keep RTKL nimble in a volatile world market and rededicate this firm to the values we cherish: creativity, humanistic design and the creation of great places."
A native of Baltimore, Jacob's international reputation for the design of large-scale projects was cemented by his work with the Rouse Company,Universal Studios, The Irvine Company and many other commercial development and corporate clients around the world. He was named Vice President of RTKL in 1986, elected to the firm's Board of Directors in 1997, promoted to Senior Vice President in 1999, and named Vice Chairman in 2002. He has a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Carnegie Mellon University. He and his wife Ria reside in both the Los Angeles and Baltimore-Washington areas.
