The Columbus office of Turner Construction Company, in conjunction with its minority venture partner, Smoot Construction Company, has been awarded a contract to manage a $70 million renovation of the William Oxley Thompson Library at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2008. Turner Construction Company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Turner Corporation, the nation's leading general builder. This project involves 250,000-sq.-ft. of renovations and a 90,000-sq.-ft. addition. The original library building was completed in 1913, and additions were built in 1951 and 1977. Preconstruction efforts for the project include Turner's assistance in the determination of the constructability and feasibility of the renovation project. It also includes helping the University meet the programming needs of a modern research library, such as housing 1.8 million volumes, seating 1,800 users, and providing adequate room for an array of traditional and new information services and library operations. Turner's strong preconstruction capabilities were of importance in the firm's selection as construction manager. Turner recently completed the $187 million renovation of Ohio Stadium at Ohio State University and is currently constructing the $42 million Physical Science Research Building, also on the Ohio State campus.
