01/16/2005

Walter Industries, Inc. (NYSE:WLT) announced today that Brad Kitterman, a veteran executive from the utility industry, has been named President of its U.S. Pipe & Foundry subsidiary.

Mr. Kitterman, 43, was formerly President of the North American Utilities Division for Schlumberger Ltd., which specializes in providing oil and gas services. The division, which manufactures and supplies water, electric and gas meters for the utility industry, doubled its revenues in 1998-2002 under Mr. Kitterman's leadership. He also drove margin expansion through increased efficiencies in the division's manufacturing operations.

"We are extremely pleased to have Brad's industry expertise as he takes the leadership role at U.S. Pipe," said Don DeFosset, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Walter Industries. "He will help us continue to drive improved performance for U.S. Pipe, as well as to broaden our opportunities for growth."

Mr. Kitterman built a wide range of experience during a 13-year career at Schlumberger, where he served in senior management positions since 1996. As general manager of its Distributed Measurement Solutions division, he led a data services startup operation, and prior to that, he was Director of Engineering for the North American Electricity Division. Mr. Kitterman has a degree in engineering from Auburn University.

Mr. Kitterman replaces Tony Hines, who served as interim President at U.S. Pipe during the recent transition period. "Tony helped Pipe through extremely difficult challenges in 2002, and has positioned Pipe well for 2003," Mr. DeFosset said. Mr. Hines now returns to his previous position as Senior Vice President -- Operations for Walter Industries.

"This is an exciting time for the ductile iron pipe industry," Mr. DeFosset said. "New water systems are being installed around the country to keep pace with development, and many cities are replacing aging infrastructure. I'm confident that U.S. Pipe, a core business for Walter Industries, will thrive under Brad's leadership."

U.S. Pipe, based in Birmingham, Alabama, is one of the nation's largest domestic producers of ductile iron pipe, selling to municipalities and contractors for clean water transmission. Its products, which include pipe, fittings, valves and hydrants, are manufactured at five plants around the United States.

Walter Industries, Inc. is a diversified company with five principal operating businesses and revenues of approximately $1.9 billion. The company is a leader in homebuilding, home financing, water transmission products, energy services, and specialty aluminum products. Based in Tampa, Florida, the company employs approximately 6,300 people.
